Numeracy 2019 - 2020

Mrs Kitchin

Mathematics at St James' CE Junior School

Our aim is to equip all pupils with the skills and confidence to solve a range of problems through fluency with numbers and mathematical reasoning and problem solving.  Children are encouraged to see the mathematics that surrounds them everyday and enjoy developing vital life skills.  At St James' we have been on a journey over several years in order to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. At the planning stage, teachers consider what scaffolding may be required for some children to enable them to grasp concepts and suitable challenge questions for those who may grasp the concepts quickly.  All questions aim to probe pupil understanding, use precise mathematical language and responses are expected in full sentences. Strategies are in place for teachers to provide rapid, same day intervention when required.
