Welcome to the literacy page. Literacy is a huge part of the curriculum and consists of reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling. At St James' we work hard to ensure that our literacy teaching is fun, engaging and, where possible, linked to our wider curriculum topics.

Reading: Over the last 2 years we have completely changed the way we teach reading. As most parents know from our open mornings, we use Reading VIPERS to ensure all of the 6 reading domains are taught effectively and consistently across all year groups. We strive to ensure that all chidlren can identify different question types and are taught the skills needed to answer them efficiently. We also provide as much support as possible for those children who are still improving their reading fluency through extra reading sessions with our parent volunteers. 

Writing: We use a combination of high quality texts and exciting film as the stimulus for our writing. Throughout the school year, we write for 4 different purposes: To Entertain, To Persuade, To Inform and To Discuss. Through these 4 purposes, children experience a range of text types and genres such as newspaper reports, narratives, letters, poems and non-chronological reports. Lots of time is spent working on sentence structure as well as vocabulary using techniques such as DADWAVERS (Literacy Shed) and slow writing. In every writing lesson, children focus on the different components of writing such as: drafting, revising and editing and where possible, we aim to 'publish' children's finished pieces to give them a 'real' purpose for their written work.

Spelling: All staff use Spelling Shed to plan and deliver weekly lessons based on the spelling patterns for their year groups. The pupils also have access to Spelling Shed at home where they practise the weekly spellings set by the teacher in prepartaion for their weekly test on Wednesdays. Spellings patterns that have been taught are re-visited throughout the year to help embed these in to children's writing. 

Grammar and punctuation: This is taught both discretely and as part of weekly writing lessons. The discrete sessions introduce and revise objectives and allow children to focus solely on the grammar and punctuation aspects of literacy. We also use Classroom Secrets to reinforce this and provide a more 'mastery' approach to grammar teaching. Writing lessons then allow children to demonstrate their use of grammar to write effective sentences and up-level their work using correct word class, tenses and well-chosen vocabulary. 

Our main focus in literacy is for chidlren to become confident and read and write for pleasure!
